Beti Bachao Abhiyan (Save the Girl Child)

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Balaghat is the only district in the country where parents of only daughters will not have to stand in queue for various works. In case of any dispute, police will come to their rescue on just a telephone call. They will get these facilities through Sambal Card. Beti Bachao Abhiyan (save girl child) was launched on October 5. In the first phase, famous TV artiste and MP Smt. Smiriti Irani handed over Sambal Cards to six thousand to parents having only daughters.
Balaghat district has the maximum sex ratio in Madhya Pradesh with 1021 women on every 1000 men. On the initiative of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, a survey of daughters-only parents was conducted by Anganwadi workers on the instructions of District Collector Vivek Kumar Porwal. During the survey, such parents were also asked what difficulties they face due to not having a son. It was revealed by the survey that daughters-only parents find themselves helpless in case someone else encroaches on the lands or when they have some dispute with others. Similarly, they feel embarrassed over sending their daughters to deposit electricity bills and fetching gas cylinder. Keeping these problems of daughters-only parents, the district administration had decided to provide them with a special card called Sambal Card on October 5, 2011.
The objective behind giving Sambal Cards to parents with only daughters is that they should not feel absence of son. The district administration is also going to make arrangements that priority should be given to such parents and they be given special status for bank-related tasks, clearing electricity bills, getting gas cylinders and other government works.
The district administration has also set up a control room for daughters-only parents having Sambal Cards. They can dial 07632-240035 for help in cases of harassment or dispute. Soon after getting such information, a district administration officer will visit the spot and if necessary, get a case registered with police and ensure further action.
There are 40 thousand parents with only daughters in Balaghat district. Out of these, four thousand parents have undergone family planning operation after one or two daughters. Five thousand parents have adopted family planning after three daughters. The district administration is providing Sambal Cards to all these 40 thousand families. For this, registration of daughters-only parents has been made at Anganwadi centres.
